224th ACS National Meeting, Boston (18-22 August)
The ACS national meetings are always one of the premier events
in the conference calendar and this August’s
exposition was no exception. 17,121 people attended, generating a
tremendous atmosphere. As well as the usual wealth of lectures from highly
distinguished members of the chemical community there was also a large contingent
of companies displaying their wares and, of course, Thieme Chemistry was there too.

Thieme Chemistry took this opportunity to announce the launch of
the electronic version of Science of Synthesis. The addition of our reference
work to the Integrated Major Reference Works produced by MDL was also announced
at a joint reception held on Monday evening. Many of our advisors, collaborators
and customers attended the reception, which by all accounts was a great success.
The evening was punctuated by two short speeches by Dr Guido Herrmann, Managing Director
Thieme Chemistry, and MDL’s Phil McHale. The speeches focused on the direction that the
project will take and also thanked those people that have contributed so much time and
effort to making this product a success. |

It was a great pleasure to be joined by our development partners InfoChem and also many
of our technology advisors, including Grace Baysinger (Stanford
University), and Andreas Barth (FIZ Karlsruhe), to name but a few. The reception seemed
to be a great success, providing people with an opportunity to talk to colleagues and
like-minded people in an informal atmosphere. More photos of the reception.

In the exhibition hall itself, Thieme Chemistry showcased the electronic versions
of Science of Synthesis and the Houben–Weyl series, which
are designed to provide the user with an unparalleled source of evaluated synthetic
methodologies. We also used the ACS meeting to demonstrate the alpha version of our
online solution for the well-known Pharmaceutical Substances. The final version of
Pharmaceutical Substances is earmarked for completion before the end of 2002, but it is
already generating a great deal of interest amongst current users of the print and CD
versions. |

Award for Eric N. Jacobsen
We would like to congratulate Eric N. Jacobsen, Editorial Board Member, Science of Synthesis, on being awarded the Yamada–Koga Prize 2008 which is awarded every year to a scientist whose research has a major impact in the fields of the synthesis of optically active compounds. The Yamada–Koga Prize will be awarded to Professor Eric N. Jacobsen on November 14, 2008, at the 18th Symposium on Optically Active Compounds held in Tokyo, Japan.
Awards for Steven V. Ley
We would like to congratulate Steven V. Ley, Editorial Board Member, Science of Synthesis, on receiving the Prous Institute-Overton and Meyer Award for New Technologies in Drug Discovery, European Federation of Medicinal Chemistry, Vienna (2008) and the Hans Heroff Inhoffen Medal, Helmholtz Zentrum für Infectionsforschung (2008).
Professor John Colin Tatlow (1923–2008)
We are very sorry to announce that Professor John Colin Tatlow passed away in the UK on April 9th, 2008. Professor Tatlow was the Editor-in-Chief of the E10 Organo-Fluorine Compounds (Houben–Weyl) series and made a major contribution to fluorine chemistry during his career. He was the recipient of the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry in 1990. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Over 18,000 New Reactions Added to
Science of Synthesis
Version 3.5
New York/Stuttgart Thieme is pleased to announce that Science of Synthesis Version 3.5 is now available. The electronic information resource now contains 34 volumes, out of what will eventually be a total of 48 volumes. This upgraded version has a total of 195,000 reactions, with over 18,000 new reactions, and holds significant synthetic methods for a wide range of classes of compounds. The newly added content consists of volumes 29 and 31
Volume Publication
Science of Synthesis
Volume 37
We are very pleased to announce the publication of Science of Synthesis Volume 37 [Compounds with One Saturated Carbon¾Heteroatom Bond: Ethers] by Craig J. Forsyth and Eric N. Jacobsen in May 2008. The volume is 992 pages in length and provides a critical review of methods for the synthesis of ethers.
