How do I perform a Structure Search?

  1. Select one of the three drawing packages. Then click on Draw to open the appropriate drawing window.
  2. Create the target structure/reaction in the appropriate drawing window. (For help on using ISIS/Draw please see the ISIS/Draw website: www.mdli.com) The arrow and plus sign tools are used to draw the desired reaction scheme.
  3. Transfer the query to the Structure/Reaction Query Display by clicking on the button on the bottom left hand corner of the window for ChemDraw and Java Applet, and by clicking on the Transfer Mode icon in the top left-hand corner of the ISIS/Draw window.
  4. Select one of the three search options:

If no arrow has been drawn, it will not be possible to select Reaction. If you wish to search for a reaction at this stage, simply click on the Edit button and draw an arrow in the scheme.

Also note that it is not possible to specify intermediates within a multistep reaction i.e. the following reaction scheme is not searchable: A > B > C. However, it is, of course, possible to search for the reactions A > C, or B > C.

To start the search within Science of Synthesis, simply click on .

If you wish to edit the structure, you can return to the drawing window by clicking on .

See Search Results for details on viewing the results of your search.

See Advanced Search for details on how to combine text and structure searches.
