In spite of formulated plans and focused dedication, the completion of a major effort has a cruel habit to occur on the night or early morning before a degree is awarded, an award lecture is delivered, a marriage is sanctified, a son is born, a holiday is taken. So it was for Marek (right), Krista (left) and I on the day before Christmas, 2005 when, as the photo and its props indicate, our magnus opus, Volume 8a-b was completed. Our wish is for its utility, of course, and extends to the other dedicated authors and Thieme in the most worthy quest of this Bible of synthetic chemistry for the 21st Century."
