This book reveals the logic behind the described methods and discuss the mechanisms. I never expected I would want to own another protection/deprotection reference book in addition to Greene's "Protective groups in organic synthesis" and I was wrong. Kocienski managed to present broad, comprehensive overview of a "boring but necessary" information as a most enjoyable and thought-provoking reading. The book is filled with carefully selected pieces from total syntheses, often illustrating formidable problems solved in a beautiful way. The book does not reference every single known methods as Greene's does, but is extraordinary informative. I believe the intellectual values of both books are comparable. If you are facing a problem (as usual :) or are designing a complex synthesis, I would suggest to read Kocienski's book first and then supplement it from Greene's. Works for me. If you enjoy the Synthesis, you will love this book.

Protecting Groups by Philip Kocienski is one of the most successful books on this topic. The quality has improved substantially from the first to the third edition, making the present book comparable to the standard reference work, "Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis". (...) Protecting Groups is the better book for advanced and graduate level students who wish to learn organic synthesis tactics (...) the interesting and instructive discussions of the well-chosen examples in Kocienski's monograph are of enormous value. Protecting Groups provides the reader with an in-depth treatise about protecting groups. (...) One has to say that the schemes are beautiful and very aesthetical. (...) Kocienski has included some philosophical and witty statements that are highly refreshing and pithy. (...) Clearly, the book is an amazing compilation of organic chemistry and one must compliment Professor Kocienski on this fantastic selection of suitable examples...

There are two major classes of books in a professional library. First, there are the books that you read once and never take off the shelf again. These are always easily identified because they have shiny bindings and look nice on the shelves. Then there are those books that are so indispensable that you find yourself referring to them almost every day. Over time, their bindings become broken and the cover becomes shopworn. They are respected members of your professional family. This book by Kocienski will definitely fall into this latter category. It possesses a number of noteworthy features: it is well organized, covers useful information, and is eminently readable - an excellent combination.

What would one with some experience in organic chemistry expect to find in a 668-page, third edition of a book, entitled Protecting Groups? How does one presume it to be organized? These questions become somewhat irrelevant after you have read Philip Kocienski’s book because you come to realize that it takes much more than experience in organic synthesis to produce the book Prof. Kocienski did.

Protecting Groups, by Philip J. Kocienski, is one of those books about which one can say that, if it had not already existed, it would have been necessary to write it. (...) It is outstandingly suitable as a student textbook to accompany a lecture course, but can also serve as a reference source to provide valuable ideas to help the experimentalist in developing protecting group strategies. (...) Therefore, I can recommend without hesitation that one should buy this new edition.

"The paperback edition of the 3rd edition of Kocienski’s Protection Groups has now appeared. It is beautifully written and produced and represents fantastic value for the money. (...) The book is a joy to read yet is essentially a reference book too, assisted by its clear organisation and useful index. It is by far the best book on protection groups but is different from the other important book, by Greene and Wuts, on the same subject. You need both books, but with Kocienski’s book, now in paperback at a lower price, it can and should be on every chemist’s bookshelf as well as in the library. Highly recommended!"

Chemie
